The Greyhound Racing Dog-Good For Owning Or Racing

When thinking of dog racing, the greyhound is the dog breed that most likely comes to mind. That makes sense as this is what it has primarily been bred for. It is the fastest breed of dog being able to sometimes reach up to 70 kilometers or 43 miles per hour.

The build of the greyhound racing dog is somewhat responsible for the fact that it can run so fast.. It has long, powerful legs, a deep chest, a flexible spine, and such a slim build that racing at these speeds is easy for the greyhound. The male dogs can reach up to 20 centimeters in height and weigh up to 90 pounds while the females are usually about 71 centimeters tall and weigh about 75 pounds. They have very short hair and can come in any variation of 30 different colors. The speed of the greyhound racing dogs is described in many ways and the way it is built is definitely one of them. It has the largest heart of all dogs and a very flexible spine which helps it when racing. It can accomplish something called the double suspension gallop where all four feet are off the ground at the same time and then land at the same time so it looks like it is galloping like a horse. A dog with a smaller heart or less flexible structure of muscles couldn’t do that without injuring itself.

An interesting fact is that although the greyhounds are known as racing dogs and although they do love to sprint, they are not lovers of running for long distances nor do they require extensive exercise as house pets. If you take your greyhound racing dog on as short a walk as 20-30 minutes a day, they can live very long and healthy lives. They have even been referred to as “forty-five mile per hour couch potatoes.’ They are wonderful pets as they become very attached and loyal to their owners and are very quiet and gentle animals. They get along wonderfully with other pets and children. They are also wonderful with strangers and bark very little which makes them good in neighborhoods.
They do have such a strong build that if you are going to own one, it is a good idea to have a four to six foot fence around your yard as they could jump over anything smaller. They are wonderful animals and very fun to have as part of your family.
