Speed of a Greyhound Dog
Greyhounds are a breed of hunting dog that have been bred for racing. A combination of a long and powerful legs, deep chest, flexible spine and slim build allows the greyhound to reach speeds of around 70 kilometers per hour or 43 miles per hour. The speed of a greyhound dog makes them the fastest of all dog breeds.
The key to the speed of a greyhound dog can be found in its light but muscular build, large heart, and highest percentage of fast-twitch muscle of any breed. Greyhounds have a double suspension gallop and extreme flexibility of the spine. Although greyhounds are extremely fast and athletic, they are not high-energy dogs. Despite their reputation as racing dogs, they are sprinters. While they love running, they do not require extensive exercise. An adult greyhound will stay healthy and happy with a daily walk of as little as 20 to 30 minutes. Greyhounds have been referred to as “Forty-five mile per hour couch potatoes.” Most are quiet and gentle animals. These dogs make wonderful pets for families due to their mild temperament. This is a very non-aggressive breed and a greyhound will generally walk away from a bothersome child, rather than growl or snap. Because they do not need a lot of room, they can be ideal for apartment life. Greyhounds do not bark much and can be friendly with strangers.
Unfortunately, many greyhounds are euthanized after their racing career is over. The racing career typically ends when the dog is between two and five years of age. A greyhound will live for ten to eleven years on average. There are numerous rescue agencies that work to place these dogs with loving families. Adoption groups require the dogs to be kept on a leash due to the speed of a greyhound dog, strength and drive to hunt prey.
